MANIPULATION TUTORIAL

This is my first manipulation tutorial. As you can see, I'm a manip addict but I never knew that making this would so hard. I’m not good at explaining and since my English is very limited, I hope you’ll understand with my not-so-good tutorial.

We’re going to make this :

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO MAKE MANIPULATIONS :

PICTURES SELECTION

When you make a manip, please remember that your pictures will affect your result.

1. Try to make manip using High Quality pictures or you can use MQ as well. But if you using MQ pictures (I always mark MQ as pictures with pixel range around 500px or 640px for width, HQ pictures around 800px above and low quality around 400px below). Example HQ ; MQ ; LQ

2. If you do use one MQ picture and one HQ picture, always make sure you resize the HQ picture to the smaller size, following the MQ pictures. DO NOT RESIZE THE MQ/LQ PICTURES TO THE BIGGER SIZE.

3. When you choose pictures to use, please take a good look at the angle of the pictures taken. Make sure you put one and one in perfect same angle. If one picture taken from above, choose another picture taken from same angle. Like this manip. I use these two pictures : here and here. You can see the angle of the pictures taken are quite the same.

4. Make sure one picture has a large empty space in the picture, so you can put another picture on it. Like this one. You can see Emma’s picture has quite a space for putting Dan beside her. And since Dan’s picture is quote crowded (with people and such), we can’t use his picture for background.

5. Other important thing is choose pictures with almost same theme. If you choose a dark picture like this, use picture with dark theme too like this one. Choose pictures you think you can match one with another easily.

Now we can begin tutorial for maniping these two pictures.

1. Take Dan’s picture and erase the area around him. Or you can simply crop him out using Polygonal Lasso Tool like this. You also can use Pen Tool. Anything you like. But personally I prefer Polygonal Lasso Tool. And you’ll get this.

2. Put Dan’s picture on top of Emma’s picture as a new layer, we call this Dan’s Layer. I have this. You can see Dan’s picture is smaller than Emma. Be patient, we’ll get to the next step.

3. Next step will be resizing Emma’s picture to match Dan’s. Choose Emma’s Layer in your Layers Palette. Use [CTRL + T] or Transform Tool to resize the picture. Make sure you click this tool to maintain aspect ratio of the picture you want to resize. And I have this.

4. Crop area you don’t want to use. I have mine like this.

5. For Dan’s picture, the edge from Polygonal Lasso Tool is too sharp. So we can blur the edge using Blur Tool. Choose these settings and blur Dan’s picture edge until you feel it’s not too sharp anymore. I have this.

6. Since Emma and Dan on those pictures have almost matched skin tone, we shouldn’t get so much difficulty on matching the skin tone. You can play around with your images’ settings. Go to Image -> Adjustment (here). You can play around with those tools to match the skin tone. I always use Color Balance, Selective Colors, Levels, and Brightness/Contrast. You can sharpen or blur the images. You can also duplicate the images to screen, multiply and others settings in order to get matched skin tone. But when you match the skin tone of your images, please always remember to put the pictures on layers, like this.

7. I match Emma’s picture based on Dan’s. Dan’s is a little pinkish and brighter, so I use Image -> Adjustment -> Level with these settings. I have this.

8. Flatten the image and we’re DONE!

Here's another examples using this technique :

You can add coloring or play around with the settings. In the end, it’s all about your creativity. Please use different pictures from mine and I would like to see your result. Good luck! I hope this tutorial helps.
